This collection of songs that I’ve titled ‘Holobiont’ form a loosely entangled and interrelated ghost story, albeit with a very loose sense of the concept. In some ways it is about humanity’s capacity for and proclivity to destruction, both familial traumas and their unintended consequences, and the seemingly inexorably destructive force of the Anthropocene. These songs seek to explore the reverberations of these destructive capacities that we all too often manage through cognitive dissonance and face them head-on. Part of me wishes I could offer you something more cheerful this season, but music for me has always been about expressing what’s in my heart. And even if you can’t hear much optimism in these songs, for me the very act creation is intrinsically optimistic. That maybe, just maybe we can be kinder, more thoughtful in our interactions, and better care for each other, our wild relatives and wild spaces.
